The 'taurine comes from bulls' story has a grain of history and a mountain of myth. Taurine was first isolated from ox bile in 1827 — hence the name, from Latin taurus — but no modern energy-drink maker extracts it from animals. Industrial taurine is synthesised chemically, most commonly by reacting ethylene oxide with sodium bisulfite to make isethionic acid, then adding ammonia; an alternative route uses aziridine. The result is chemically identical to animal taurine and far cheaper, which is why every major energy-drink brand states its taurine is synthetic. The genuinely non-vegan corners are elsewhere in the can: some drinks use carmine (E120, from insects) as a colour, vitamin D3 from lanolin in fortified versions, or honey as a sweetener. The other exception is pet food: because cats cannot synthesise taurine and cheap feed-grade taurine can be animal-derived, vegan cat foods specifically use synthetic taurine and say so on the label.
