A good documentary does something an essay cannot: it shows. Below is a curated list of the films that most often appear in 'what made you go vegan?' surveys, organised by topic. Some are graphic; we note which. Most are available on major streaming platforms or YouTube.
Earthlings (2005, Shaun Monson, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix) — the single most cited 'turning point' film. Comprehensive look at pets, food, clothing, entertainment and research. Graphic. Dominion (2018, Chris Delforce) — the Australian update, technically and ethically. Aerial drone footage of factory farms. Graphic. Pignorant (2023) and the Land of Hope and Glory short films are gentler entry points.
Forks Over Knives (2011) — the Esselstyn / Campbell case for whole-food plant-based diets against heart disease. The Game Changers (2018, James Cameron / Arnold Schwarzenegger) — plant-based athletes and performance, slick and inviting. What the Health (2017) — broader claims about chronic disease; useful as a starting point, check sources before quoting.
Cowspiracy (2014) — the climate case against animal agriculture, with the personal-investigation framing that made it viral. Seaspiracy (2021) — the ocean version: industrial fishing, bycatch, dolphin and whale meat. Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021) — biodiversity, ocean, climate, all in one place; narrated by Kate Winslet.

Food, Inc. (2008) — corporate food system, including animal workers and slaughterhouse conditions. Not strictly vegan but the gateway film for many. Slaughterhouse: The Task of Blood (2020, Manuel Abramovich) — observational, unflinching, almost wordless. Argentina.
73 Cows (2018, 15 min, Alex Lockwood) — a UK beef farmer leaves the industry. Beautifully made. The End of Medicine (2022) — antimicrobial resistance and pandemic risk from animal agriculture, narrated by Rooney Mara. Christspiracy (2024) — religious-traditions angle.

Most are streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime in major countries. Dominion is on YouTube for free, made deliberately accessible. Earthlings is on the official site.
Some of these are difficult. Watch with a friend, take breaks, and don't binge them. Earthlings and Dominion are the most graphic; The Game Changers and Forks Over Knives are not.
What the Health, Cowspiracy and Seaspiracy have all been challenged on specific statistics. The core arguments are sound; check exact numbers before quoting.
73 Cows (gentle), Christmas with the Animals shorts, and most David Attenborough nature work (especially A Life on Our Planet) start the conversation without graphic content.
