Why the swap works
Conventional silk is produced by boiling silkworms alive inside their cocoons to preserve the long filament — so it is excluded from a vegan wardrobe. Its valued properties are drape, sheen, smoothness and temperature regulation, and several fibres now match them. Cupro, regenerated from cotton linter waste, drapes and shines like silk and is the standard vegan lining fabric. Tencel/lyocell, made from wood pulp in a closed-loop solvent process, is soft, cool and lustrous. Bamboo lyocell (not viscose) does the same for bedding. High-grade polyester satin mimics the sheen at low cost, though it breathes less. 'Peace silk' or 'ahimsa silk' lets moths emerge before reeling, but it remains an animal-derived fibre from farmed silkworms, so it is not considered vegan.
