The climate footprint of food, measured properly
Food causes roughly a quarter of global greenhouse-gas emissions. Life-cycle data shows where inside that quarter the emissions actually sit — and it is not transport.

Key numbers
The single largest food dataset says the same thing everywhere
The 2018 Poore & Nemecek meta-analysis pooled data from 38,700 farms in 119 countries. Its central finding is variance: the highest-impact producers of plant protein still emit less than the lowest-impact producers of beef and lamb. That means dietary change is more reliable than sourcing change, because you cannot shop your way below the floor of a high-impact product.
Food miles are the wrong lever
For most products transport is 1–9% of the total footprint, dominated instead by land-use change, enteric fermentation, manure and feed production. Air-freighted produce is the exception — but it is a tiny share of trade, and shipping a kilogram of beans across an ocean still beats a locally raised kilogram of beef by an order of magnitude.

Methane, and why the clock matters
Ruminant methane has an atmospheric lifetime of roughly twelve years but around 80 times the warming power of CO₂ over twenty years. Because it decays quickly, reducing livestock numbers produces measurable cooling inside decades rather than centuries — one of the few climate levers with fast feedback.
What an individual change is worth
Switching a typical high-income diet to a plant-based one avoids roughly 0.8–1.5 tonnes CO₂e per person per year, comparable to a transatlantic return flight, and unlike most household changes it takes effect immediately and costs nothing.

- Is cheese really that high-impact?
- Yes — around 21 kg CO₂e per kilogram, because roughly ten litres of milk go into one kilogram of hard cheese.
- Which plant milk is best for the climate?
- Oat and soy have the lowest combined emissions, land and water profile; all plant milks beat dairy on emissions.
- Does eating less meat help faster than driving less?
- For most households yes, because methane reductions act on a decadal timescale and diet changes need no new equipment.
- What about food waste?
- Waste adds roughly 6% of global emissions on its own. Reducing waste and shifting diet are additive, not alternatives.
