Land, forests and biodiversity: agriculture's biggest bill
Livestock uses 77% of farmland and returns 18% of calories. That ratio is why land use — not emissions alone — is the sharpest environmental argument.

The efficiency loss is thermodynamic
Feeding crops to animals discards most of the energy as heat, movement and inedible tissue. Conversion efficiencies run from roughly 3% for beef to about 20% for chicken and milk. Any system built on that ratio needs more land than one that eats the crops directly.
Deforestation follows demand, not borders
Soy is often blamed for forest loss, and correctly — but around three-quarters of global soy is crushed into animal feed. Beef and feed-soy together dominate tropical clearance, which is why import bans and certification schemes struggle: the demand signal simply relocates.

Biodiversity: habitat conversion is the main mechanism

Rewilding freed land is the missed lever
Carbon opportunity cost accounting shows that restoring vegetation on land currently used for animal agriculture could sequester several hundred gigatonnes of CO₂ over decades — comparable to a decade or more of global emissions, and achievable without new technology.
