Skittles are a useful test case for how a sweet becomes 'accidentally vegan'. The chew comes from sugar, corn syrup and hydrogenated palm kernel oil rather than gelatin, so the only animal risks were ever gelatin in the shell and carmine in the red colour. Mars removed gelatin from UK Skittles in 2009 and phased carmine out of the main lines, leaving synthetic dyes: E102 tartrazine, E110 sunset yellow, E129 allura red and E133 brilliant blue.
