A functioning market requires that the person who benefits from a transaction bears its costs. Animal agriculture systematically breaks that rule. Public money supports feed crops and livestock operations; manure lagoons and ammonia emissions impose costs on neighbouring property owners; routine antimicrobial use in livestock contributes to resistance whose costs land in hospitals; and the risk of zoonotic spillover from intensive systems is borne by everyone.

None of these are objections to meat. They are objections to a price that lies. A libertarian has no reason to defend a lying price.

In the United States, several states passed laws criminalising undercover recording at agricultural facilities. Federal courts have struck down or partially invalidated a number of them on First Amendment grounds — in Idaho, Utah, Iowa and Kansas among others. The very existence of these statutes is an admission: the industry's practices cannot survive documentation, so the state was asked to prohibit documentation instead.

Whatever you think about animals, a market cannot function when producers use legislation to prevent buyers learning what they are buying.

The pattern repeats in labelling. Livestock lobbies across the EU and several US states have pushed to ban plant-based products from using terms like 'burger', 'sausage' or 'milk'. The stated rationale is consumer confusion; no serious evidence of such confusion exists, and the effect is to raise the marketing costs of a competing product.

The consistent free-market position is the opposite: require accurate ingredient and production-method disclosure on every product, animal and plant alike, and let buyers decide.

Remove production subsidies and price the externalities and animal products become significantly more expensive relative to plant proteins. Analyses of true-cost accounting in food consistently find that meat and dairy carry the largest hidden costs of any food category. The result is not prohibition; it is a smaller, more expensive, higher-welfare animal sector and a much larger plant sector — an outcome reached by prices rather than by bans.

That is a policy programme a libertarian can support without ever conceding a single premise of animal-rights philosophy.
