What is actually in it
Skittles are a useful test case for how a sweet becomes 'accidentally vegan'. The chew comes from sugar, corn syrup and hydrogenated palm kernel oil rather than gelatin, so the only animal risks were ever gelatin in the shell and carmine in the red colour. Mars removed gelatin from UK Skittles in 2009 and phased carmine out of the main lines, leaving synthetic dyes: E102 tartrazine, E110 sunset yellow, E129 allura red and E133 brilliant blue. Two caveats matter. First, product families diverge — Skittles Gummies, some Squishy Cloudz and various limited editions use gelatin, so 'Skittles are vegan' is only true of the classic chew. Second, formulations are per-market: a pack made for the US, Australia or the Gulf can carry a different colour set from the same-looking European pack. Ethically, the palm oil in the fat blend is the live issue for many people rather than any animal ingredient.
Brand by brand
| Brand | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Skittles Original / Fruits (UK & EU) | Vegana | No gelatin, no carmine; widely listed as accidentally vegan. |
| Skittles Sours & Wild Berry | Sapa kutim vegana | Same chew base; check the specific pack in non-EU markets. |
| Skittles Gummies | Mana veganachu | Gelatin-set — a distinct product line. |
| Skittles Squishy Cloudz | Mana veganachu | Contains gelatin. |
Recipes change between markets and batches — treat this as a starting point and read the pack.

Is the shine on Skittles shellac?
The classic chew uses a carnauba-wax-based polish rather than shellac, but shellac (E904) does appear on other hard-shelled sweets, so it is worth checking each brand.
Are Skittles vegan in the US?
The mainstream US fruit chews list no animal ingredients, but the US label set changes more often; read the pack rather than relying on a blog list.
What is the palm oil concern?
Palm kernel oil is plant-based, so it does not affect vegan status, but deforestation for palm destroys habitat for orangutans and other wildlife — a reason many vegans still avoid it.
