What is actually in it
Peanut butter is the clearest case of a food that is vegan by default and non-vegan only by addition. The base is roasted, ground peanuts, which are legumes, giving roughly 25 g protein per 100 g and a fatty-acid profile dominated by oleic acid. Three additives change the verdict. Honey appears in honey-roast and 'sweet and salty' jars, sometimes far down the list. Fish-derived omega-3 (EPA/DHA) is added to a small number of fortified spreads marketed for heart health, which is easy to miss because the front of the pack says 'omega-3' without naming the source; algal DHA versions exist and are vegan. Vitamin D3 in fortified spreads is usually lanolin-derived from sheep wool unless it states D3 (lichen) or D2. Chocolate, cheesecake and dessert-flavour jars often carry milk solids or whey. Everything else you will see — palm oil, mono- and diglycerides, icing sugar, molasses — is plant-derived in practice, though mono- and diglycerides can theoretically come from animal fat, which is why some brands add a 'from vegetable sources' note.
Label codes to recognise
- E471 — Mono- and diglycerides
- Usually plant, occasionally animal fat
- D3 (cholecalciferol) — Vitamin D3
- Lanolin unless lichen-sourced
- DHA / EPA — Omega-3
- Fish oil unless algal
- Honey — Honey
- Animal (bee)

Is powdered peanut butter vegan?
Yes in the plain versions — it is defatted peanut flour with a little salt and sugar. Chocolate powdered versions can contain milk.
Which peanut butter has the best protein?
The 100%-peanut jars, because nothing dilutes the peanut content. Two tablespoons give about 7-8 g of protein.
Is peanut butter healthy on a plant-based diet?
It is a useful source of protein, monounsaturated fat, vitamin E and magnesium. Choose unsweetened jars and treat it as a calorie-dense food rather than a free extra.
