Most cuisines were already mostly plant-based

Historic peasant cooking across the Mediterranean, South Asia, West Africa, the Levant, East Asia and Mesoamerica is built on grains, legumes, vegetables and oils, with animal products used as garnish or feast food. That is why the easiest plant-based cities are frequently not the ones with the most dedicated vegan restaurants: a place with strong dal, mezze, injera-and-shiro, or tortilla-and-frijoles traditions offers dozens of naturally plant-based meals at every price point.

Labelling law changes everything for packaged food

In the EU and UK, milk, egg, fish, crustaceans and molluscs must be declared as allergens in the ingredient list, which makes packaged screening fast. In the US, the FALCPA allergen list covers milk, eggs, fish and shellfish, but 'natural flavours' can obscure animal origin. In many other markets, disclosure is voluntary or partial, so certification marks and a small vocabulary of local ingredient names matter more.

The vocabulary is the real travel skill

The phrase that works is rarely 'I am vegan'. It is the specific list: no meat, no fish, no fish sauce, no egg, no milk, no butter, no ghee, no lard, no broth. In many cuisines a single hidden ingredient — fish sauce in Southeast Asia, ghee in South Asia, lard in Central Europe and Mexico, butter in French cooking, dashi in Japan — accounts for most accidental animal content in otherwise plant-based dishes.

Cost and availability are decoupled from wealth

Some of the cheapest and easiest places to eat plant-based are middle-income cities with strong street-food legume traditions; some of the hardest are wealthy places with meat-centred national cuisines and few fortified products. Availability of B12-fortified foods, rather than restaurant count, is the variable that most affects long-term feasibility for residents.

Arriving in a new city

Roughly two hours of preparation removes most of the friction of the first week.

  1. 1

    Learn six words

Meat, fish, egg, milk, butter, broth — plus the phrase for 'without'. This outperforms any app.

  2. 2

    Find the legume dish

Every food culture has one. It becomes your reliable, inexpensive default while you learn the rest.

  3. 3

    Do one large supermarket shop

Establish which fortified milk, tofu and legume products exist locally before relying on restaurants.

  4. 4

    Save two written phrases

One for ordering, one for explaining a serious allergy where cross-contamination matters to you.

  5. 5

    Identify a fallback chain

Even in difficult cities, one supermarket chain or one cuisine reliably works at 22:00.

Travel practice

Worth doing

  • Carry B12 rather than assuming you will find it — formulations and dosages vary widely.
  • Ask about broth and cooking fat, not just visible ingredients.
  • Use markets for produce and supermarkets for fortified products.
  • Learn the local name of tofu, tempeh or the regional legume protein.

Worth avoiding

  • Assuming 'vegetarian' excludes fish, egg or dairy in every country — definitions vary considerably.
  • Relying only on dedicated vegan restaurants, which are often the most expensive option available.
  • Treating a certification mark as universal; schemes and standards differ by market.
  • Skipping breakfast planning, which is the meal most likely to be dairy- and egg-centred.

Questions about eating plant-based away from home

Which cuisines are easiest?

Indian, Ethiopian, Levantine, Thai and Vietnamese (with fish-sauce substitution), Mexican, and much of Mediterranean cooking all offer numerous naturally plant-based dishes at ordinary prices.

How do I handle fish sauce?

Ask for the dish without it and with soy sauce or salt instead. In Thailand and Vietnam the specific request is understood in most kitchens, particularly with the Buddhist-vegetarian term used locally.

What about business meals and family events?

Contact the host or restaurant in advance with a short list of what you do not eat rather than a label. Kitchens respond much better to concrete constraints than categories.

Is it more expensive when travelling?

Only if you eat at dedicated plant-based restaurants. Market produce, bakery items and the local legume dish are usually the cheapest food available.

How do I keep B12 consistent while travelling?

A weekly 1,000–2,000 µg tablet is easier to maintain across time zones and disrupted routines than a daily dose.

Do these city guides cover groceries or only restaurants?

Both. Long-term feasibility in a place is determined mainly by grocery availability, so fortified products and legume staples are covered alongside eating out.
